This listing is for an original NOS Ford intake manifold heat shield that we pulled from our service department. We have 68 of these heat shields available, which gives you an idea of how large our service department was during Ford's performance days before Ford cut most of their racing division.
For those who don’t know, an intake manifold heat shield helps prevent oil from baking into the bottom of your intake manifold by creating a barrier between the hot engine components and the intake manifold. When oil comes into contact with hot surfaces, it can bake and create smoke. By keeping the intake manifold cooler, the heat shield reduces the likelihood of oil vaporizing and sticking to the manifold, thus decreasing the chances of smoking and buildup.
A cast item typically has a rougher surface compared to a stamped piece of steel. This roughness provides more surface area for oil and debris to adhere to, making it easier for them to embed into the surface. On the other hand, a stamped piece of steel usually has a smoother surface, which allows oil and debris to slide off more easily without embedding into the surface. This difference in surface texture means that a cast item is more prone to retaining oil and debris, while a stamped piece of steel is better at shedding them.
As aluminum intake manifolds have evolved, the need for things such as heat risers has become unnecessary. Heat risers typically bring exhaust from the core of the engine into the top of the engine, allowing heat to conduct more evenly from top to bottom. This has been aided by the materials chosen by manufacturers for intake manifolds compared to when heat risers were first introduced in iron intake manifolds. Since the late 1960s, Ford has been manufacturing their manifolds out of aluminum and lighter materials that conduct heat much more efficiently and quickly than steel, once again making heat risers unnecessary. However, Ford has still been using heat risers in their cylinder heads and intake manifold ducts, making the heat shield more prudent to use when running extreme heat against the cast surface of aluminum.
If you are running an original Ford-style intake manifold that has a heat riser on the bottom and are using cylinder heads that bring heat from the exhaust into the intake manifold, we suggest using a heat shield to help eliminate excess engine vapor/smoke. If your intake manifold has a heat riser, but your cylinder heads do not have provisions for exhaust heat, then purchasing this heat shield is unnecessary. Remember, it is the abnormal heat temperature brought up from the cylinder head that creates the systematic baking of oil on the bottom of the heat riser. So, if your cylinder head does not have heat provisions, please do not purchase, as it is an unnecessary expense on your behalf.

Most of the staining you'll find on this item is oil from the manufacturing process. However, since our facility is near the ocean, moisture is always present.
