- Willy's Ball Buster is a Go-No-Go gauge for checking the diameter of standard size American billiard balls - 2.250". This is the diameter of billiard balls specified for use by the BCA (Billiard Congress of America, the WPA (World Pool Association), TAPS, APA, etc.
- BCA & WPA specifically require balls to be within +/- 5 one-thousandths of an inch of the specified 2.250" diameter. Willy's unique gauge is manufactured to distinguish between balls which are smaller than this range and larger than this range. Other billiard organizations go by BCA and/or WPA equipment rules, including ball size.
- Using Willy's gauge it takes only a few seconds to test one ball. Simply, place the ball in the hole on the RED plate. If it falls thru the hole it is too small. That is, it is more than 5 one-thousandths of an inch smaller than 2.250". Most out-of-spec balls will fail this way. Many balls we have tested in the field are two and three times smaller than this (that is, 15 thousandths of an inch too small).
- If the ball does not fall thru the RED plate, place it on the BLUE plate. If it does NOT fall thru this hole, it is too large. That is, larger than 2.255" in diameter, and out-of-spec. Most usually this will happen with a coin-op cue ball, or balls from a cheap set, or balls made for mass market sale, and not for serious play.
- Even billiard balls manufactured by a reputable company will eventually wear down from normal play and over cleaning with abrasive cleaners in ball posihing machines.
- Balls do not necessarily wear evenly. Often a worn ball will also show signs of eccentricity: rolling in a wandering manner, coming to a stop with a noticable drift off course, or tilting sideways at the final moment of the roll.
- A worn ball is also a lighter ball. If a worn ball is mixed with unworn balls (as they often are in public billiard venues) the results can create puzzling play scenarios. One worn ball can easily foul an otherwise tight rack, several will thwart the best efforts at making a tight rack and the explosive break that goes with it.

- Willy's Ball Buster is manufactured from dimensionally stable fiberglass resin laminate. It is small enough to fit in your shirt or pants pocket, or in the accessory pouch of larger cue cases.
- Willy's Ball Buster is not endorsed by the BCA, WPA or any billiard league. Bonewright Gauge Company is not associated with any of these organizations in any manner. The Ball Buster simply tests the diameter of standard size American billiard balls as you would otherwise do with standard machinists' precision measuring instruments.

Bankshot Willy's Precision American Billiard Ball Gauge tests standard size (2.25") billiard balls for conformity to BCA, WPA & TAP tournament size standards (2.250" +/- 0.005" ). The gauge is very simple to use: A conforming ball will pass thru the BLUE plate, but not pass thru the RED plate. Billiard balls, particularly cue balls, wear out over time, use and excessive cleaning. This not only affects their diameter making them too small for legitimate tournament play, but also their roundness and weight. Precise matching of ball diameters is mandatory to achieve a tight rack with minimal gaps. It takes only one undersize ball to defeat the tightness of a complete 9 or 15 ball rack. Intuitive operation: Compare two balls, a whole set, or two sets side by side easily and convincingly. If one ball passes thru the red plate and another doesn't, it's only because the first ball is smaller than the second, and is therefore out-of-spec. No need for expensive machinist measuring tools like micrometers and dial calipers, or the training to use them correctly. Why practice with balls which are deficient? Use Willy's gauge to see if you need a new set of balls !
