Matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls, are a group of several wooden dolls with decreasing size that fit one by one. Each doll is divided in the middle and releases another smaller doll inside when opened. The traditional matryoshka is usually rounded and decoratively painted and resembles a pretty young farmer, dressed in an extravagant sarafan costume, a loose-fitting traditional Russian garment. The name "Matryoshka" literally means "little matrone" and comes from the Latin word for mother. The dolls often follow a theme, these themes can vary, from Russian fairytale characters to Soviet leaders. In the West, matryoshka dolls are often mistakenly referred to as "babushka", meaning "grandmother" or "old woman". The first Russian nesting doll was carved in 1890 at an educational workshop for children, whose purpose was to make and sell children's toys. The set consisted of 8 dolls where the outer was a mother in a traditional dress holding a rooster with a red comb. The inner dolls were her children, five girls and a boy, and the innermost a baby. The educational workshop for children was closed in the late 1890s, but the tradition of matryoshka was simply moved to Semyonov.

Tracking & Notifications
