Introduction to the Classification of Power over Ethernet (PoE)
Power over Ethernet (PoE) technology has revolutionized the way power is delivered to networked devices, eliminating the need for separate power cables and enabling greater flexibility in network deployment. PoE enables the transmission of both data and electrical power over a standard Ethernet cable, simplifying installation and reducing costs.
One crucial aspect of PoE is its classification system, which categorizes devices based on their power requirements and capabilities. The classification system ensures compatibility and efficient power delivery between Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), such as PoE switches or injectors, and Powered Devices (PDs), including IP phones, wireless access points, surveillance cameras, and other networked devices.
The PoE classification system consists of different power classes, each denoting a specific power level that a PD can receive. The classes are defined by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 802.3af and 802.3at, commonly known as PoE and PoE+ respectively. These standards specify the maximum power that can be delivered to a PD, the voltage levels, and the negotiation process between PSE and PD.
In the 802.3af standard, which represents PoE, devices are classified into three power classes: Class 0, Class 1, and Class 2. Class 0 devices do not require power and are not powered by PoE. Class 1 devices can draw up to 3.84 watts, while Class 2 devices can draw up to 6.49 watts.
On the other hand, the 802.3at standard, or PoE+, introduced additional power classes to meet the increasing demands of power-hungry devices. PoE+ devices are classified into four power classes: Class 0, Class 3, Class 4, and Class 5. Class 3 devices can draw up to 12.95 watts, Class 4 devices can draw up to 25.5 watts, and Class 5 devices can draw up to 51 watts.
The classification process occurs during the initial connection between the PSE and the PD. The PSE detects the PD's power requirements by applying a low voltage to the cable and monitoring the PD's response. Based on this detection, the PSE determines the appropriate power class and delivers power accordingly.
By implementing the classification system, PoE ensures that power is delivered efficiently and safely to the connected devices. It enables network administrators to optimize power allocation, prevent overloading, and ensure compatibility between PSEs and PDs.

What does a PoE Injector offer?

You may return most items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund.

This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (5 to 10 business days), the time it takes us to process your return once we receive it (3 to 5 business days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (5 to 10 business days).

Shipping Cost
We'll pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.). • Returns to a IBSPOT store will be refunded to the original form of payment or gift card. • Mail-in returns with our prepaid return label will be refunded back to the original form of payment within 3-5 business days after we receive your return.
